  • Problems with F-Prot Antivirus Updater

Check the connection. If you are not connected to the Internet, an update of the virus signature files via the Internet will not function.
What version of F-Prot Antivirus is installed? We no longer support updates in version 3.11A and older. Please make sure you have the latest version available. To view what the latest version of F-Prot Antivirus is, please browse through our current versions page and upgrade if necessary.
Do you have a firewall installed? Many personal firewalls take it upon themselves to close all traffic unless it is explicitly opened. Make sure that the Updater is “allowed” through to update.
Do you connect through a proxy? F-Prot Antivirus Updater does not support Proxy authentication, i.e. you cannot set user and password to connect through proxy.
Do you have Internet Explorer installed on your computer? Please note that you have to Internet Explorer 4.0 or newer installed on your computer to be able to use the Updater. Check whether Internet Explorer is set to “work offline”. If that is the case set it to “work online”.
Make sure that your customer number is correct. If you do not remember your customer number, please contact our sales department and include the name that was used to purchase the license.
If none of the above solves your problems contact support.

  • Updating the virus signature files from local server
First you need to get the virus signature files from F-Prot Antivirus web site.
Since the Server is usually "logged off" you can use Windows Scheduled tasks and F-Prot Updater with command line switches.
Make sure that the folder containing the virus definition files is locally shared.
Set the workstations to update using LAN and type the correct path.

  • What are the command line switches for installing F-Prot Antivirus for Windows.

The command line information is available here:
InstallShield command lines for installing F-Prot for Windows.

  • What command lines are used with the Updater?

The command lines for the updater are:
/RUN – Runs the Updater and updates but doesn´t quit.
/QUIT – Runs and updates and quits.
/HIDDEN – Runs the Updater hidden and updates and quits.
If LAN or INTERNET is not specified then the updater uses the stored settings.
/LAN – runs the Updater, updating from the stored path in LAN mode.
/LAN=path – runs the Updater, updating from the given path in LAN mode.
/INTERNET – runs the Updater, updating from the internet.
/ADMIN_DISTRIBUTE – Run an internet update copying the updated files to the stored LAN path.
If you use the /LAN switch the updater uses the set path in the updater.
Remember to have the correct path in the updater before running with command lines

  • When I try to run F-Prot Antivirus I receive the error message: "The handle is invalid"

There are three possible reasons for this error:

If you install F-Prot Antivirus for Windows on Windows NT/2000/2003/XP you sometimes need to install it twice. When you install again, select "Repair".
If you have a very old version of F-Prot Antivirus for Windows and install a new version without uninstalling the old version this error may occur. See solution below.
If you have F-Prot Antivirus for Windows installed on a computer running Windows 95/98/ME and upgrade to Windows NT/2000/2003/XP and install F-Prot Antivirus for Windows again, you may reiceive this error. See solution below.

    The solution

The solution is to uninstall manually and install F-Prot Antivirus for Windows again:

Shut down all F-Prot Antivirus programs.
    Delete F-Prot Antivirus folder (default: C:\PROGRAM FILES\FSI\F-PROT)
Go to Start Run, type “regedit” and click the OK button
    Remove the following registry keys:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\FRISK Software International]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{9FD12630-1991-46F5-8479-92DE1EAE87DA}]
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FPA_RTP
